FLINT, Michigan — By his twenties, James Thigpin Jr. had decided to turn his passion for graphic art and photography into a profitable venture.

The recent University of Michigan-Flint graduate, 24, now runs Flint-based Closet Studio, a business that specializes in branding and serves more than 40 clients.

“Entrepreneurship is important because you don’t want people to tell you what you can and can’t do in life. You want to make your own lane,” Thigpin said.

“I think artists don’t think they can make a living at what they do. I’m doing what I love and still able to feed myself. You have to go for it.”

It’s the type of entrepreneurship energy organizers of Saturday’s Young Entrepreneurs Summit hope to revive and foster in Flint.

Thigpin was among dozens of aspiring young entrepreneurs, from high schoolers to college grads, who attended the networking event at the Riverfront Banquet Center downtown.

“We were the Silicon Valley of our day, with the carriage industry and auto industry,” said Joel Rash, program coordinator for the Yes Flint and Genesee Network, which organized the event.

“This is where innovators came to start a company and have an impact. With the success of General Motors, we got away from that entrepreneurship heritage and 100 years after GM formed, the economy has changed drastically.

“We feel the entrepreneurship spirit is still here and we want to nurture that spirit.”

The event was set to feature a keynote speech from Flint native and former Michigan State University basketball star Mateen Cleaves, as well as information in areas such as fashion, graphic arts, videography, photography, music and online business.

“I just like having creative control,” said recent Mott Community College graduate Donyale Walton, 24, of Flint who started fashion publication Liv Lux after spending five months interning at Marie Claire in New York.

Walton, who has attended Fashion Week twice and has served as a fashion expert for NBC News, said she hopes to use her knowledge to promote affordable fashion in her home city.

“I think now that jobs aren’t as abundant, people are going back to what they’re passionate about and what makes them happy,” she said. “It’s about finding out how you can do what you love and still support yourself.”

Entrepreneurs learned about local resources, including innovation and business incubators at both UM-Flint and Kettering University.

“In a time when our economy is having such challenges, it’s important to identify other opportunities from an entrepreneurial perspective,” said Kenyetta Dotson, outreach coordinator for Yes. “We don’t want people to feel hopeless. You do have the power to create your own opportunities.”

Two totally different videos, but both very good visuals. I love the depth of Rihanna's video, it's the crazy relationship that you don't want to witness but it's so real and a lot of people find themselves in this type of destructive situation.

Today on NBC25 I made the big announcement that hopefully you already knew about, that Liv Lux Magazine is returning to print!

This is so exciting for me. No matter what people say about all this new technology and the dying industry of publishing, I will always love print magazines and I think they still have a long life.

I'm very thankful to the entire team at NBC25 (MiNbcNews.com) for having me each week to spread the fashion gospel with you guys. I know it may be hard to wake up that early (5-7am) so I'll be sure to post the links each week.

The secret weapon to wearing heels all day without killing yourself? A platform. Yes, I've talked about them before in my Fashion Style Guide and now I rarely buy shoes without a platform. The thicker sole underneath the ball of your foot basically subtracts inches from your heel height with out actually doing so, and they make your shoes look that much more eye-catching.

Famous fashionista's recently caught out wearing bomb platform heels? Just Rihanna, Blake Lively from Gossip Girl and Kelly Rowland.

Besides having an on-call driver, platforms are one of the main reasons celebs can wear heels basically around the clock. Us mere mortals try our best to walk tall with the best of them, but if you're going to be out for more than 2-3 hours on your feet...hike up the platform height (an inch will do wonders) and bring the Fast Flats for relieve as soon as you hit the pavement, subway or car.

Such a T's: Cute and Comfy T-Shirts

If you think T-shirts will soon be a thing of the past, you can think again. T-shirts have been a wardrobe staple for decades and although the shape and fit may change, the garment will be around 'til the end of time, like Cher.

Grey, white, and black v-neck t-shirts are items that are so affordable and so versatile that any woman (or man) without one should hide in shame. Ok maybe not, but there is no real reason to not have these essentials close at hand. Personally, there is no greater joy then wearing the same basic piece in 4-5 different ways and given off a different vibe in each look.

What updates this piece from year to year is the fit. Currently, most women go for a longer style t-shirt that covers up trouble areas. Longer styles are also great for layering and pairing with different items you already have. The key is to go with a style that either hangs really well or fits pretty snug. Anything in between just looks ill-fitting.

Front row at a show during New York Fashion Week is the dream right?! Well that's exactly where you could find me last Friday for the Falguni & Shane Peacock fashion show at Lincoln Center.

Waiting for everyone to get settled in, I looked up from my blackberry and there was the one and only Joan Rivers being escorted pass me to her front row seat. And moments later, Mrs. Anthony better known as Lala made her way to her seat as well. Across from me I spotted celebrity stylist and star of MTV's hit show Styl'd was the "wicked witch of wardrobe styling" Jen Rade.

In good company, I got my camera ready and my notepad out and the show was ready to begin. But before I get in to the details let me just start off by saying...

This was my favorite show during fashion week!

I'm not sure if it was because I witnessed it first hand from front row, or if it was because I wasn't expecting such bold and amazing patterns. Either way, it was my favorite show...every other show will just have to fall in line.

Opening the show with a nude sheer dress with feathers, crystals and red floral details I knew the collection would be packed full of drama. What followed were bold royal military prints in blue, gold, reds and greens. I was sold.

Every piece could easily be seen on the covers of major magazines and in celebrity fashion spreads all over the world. We all know seeing is believing, so take a look for yourself:

Fashion Week, Rachel Zoe AND $10,000??

Can you imagine?! Not only are you a recent design graduate who has been picked out of thousands to show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, but you also get to meet fashion guru Rachel Zoe from the Rachel Zoe Project and a chance to win $10,000. That's like the fashion trifecta.

For Jusil Carroll, graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology, dreams really do come true. Supima, the promoter of American Pima cotton, held the competition fashion show during fashion week. And though we could all see the sheer joy on Carroll's face when Rachel Zoe announced her as the winner, she's no rookie at winning it big.

Jusil Carroll was the recipient of last year's $25,000 CFDA Liz Claiborne Design Scholarship, she also won a SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence and placed first in the 2011 AFT International Fashion Sketch Contest. ...did the other designers know what they were getting themselves in to???

Why You Should Care About Emerson 2012

Late as usual, I practically sprinted to Lincoln Center while praying "please let the show start late", referring to the Spring 2012 Emerson fashion show by designer Jackie Fraser-Swan. I was excited to see what the designer would come up with seeing that it was her first show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Sticking to her edgy yet refined aesthetic, Jackie did not disappoint. We were greeted by "light and darkness" which according to the designer were inspired by the curve ball that life throws at us from time to time, and it's up to us to decide whether to go down the road towards darkness or focus on the light at the end of the tunnel.

It was so great to see pieces that were interesting and conversation starters while still being wearable. So many times designers are incredibly boring offering no interest, or too over the top to the point where you have nowhere to wear the garments. The Emerson collection struck the perfect balance.

So Why Should You Care About Emerson's 2012 collection?! Because after showing for the first time during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, this collection shows promise and I'm sure it will be one of the trend setting lines in the very near future.

Jason Troisi of Project Runway

It was such a pleasant surprise yesterday when I received a text message from my friend Daria of Elle.com asking me to be her plus one at the Jason Troisi fashion show. "Of Course", I replied. Not only had I not seen her in ages (since we were crying on each others shoulders in the bathroom at Marie Claire) but I was interested to see the growth of Troisi from the Project Runway.

Arriving at Exit Art on 10th avenue, we took our seats front row and patiently awaited for the show to begin. In our program, Troisi explained the collection to be a result of "The Experiment" which was him sewing everyday for the last 3 years, making up for naive decisions in the past and speeding up the process of a vision becoming reality.

The collection had a deep feel to it with dark colors and lots of leather. Troisi's skill with leather was the stand out of the night. He sent pieces down the runway that were extremely detailed and crafted at a very high quality. Apart from his great coats and aviation details on the menswear, the leather pieces were by far my favorite to see.

Jason Troisi also used other unusual materials such as cork. Gorgeous cork corsets and skirts blended beautifully in the collection and made us all wonder why we don't own anything cork already.

All in all this was a good collection to experience. Not everything was to die for, but I can't help but to respect the time and passion put into the collection. I can only see good things in Jason Troisi's fashion future.

Independent Fashion Bloggers Conference: New York

Yesterday I had the privilege of attending the Independent Fashion Bloggers conference for a second time. It was great seeing old faces and meeting new friends, and of course learning vital information from the expert panels.

Some of the stand out panelists were Ari Goldberg of StyleCaster.com, the amazing super model Coco Rocha, and Mary Choi of MTV Style.

Of course the conference wouldn't be right without great fashion, here's a few of my favorites:

During one of the panels I pulled double duty and received a manicure while learning from @AngelNailsIt for Magnum ice cream. I had the option to receive crackle polish, minx, or a neutral color...so I chose the neutral color with Minx ring finger accents. Cute right?

#TIP- @AngelNailsIt gave me a great tip as well, she said to bring an old manicure back to life file your nails down and add cuticle oil. She said even unpolished nails looks great after adding a few drops of cuticle oil.

The night ended with words from Joe Zee, who I met for a second time (first time was at the Bergdorf Goodman event which aired on The City), and he gave great insight from a real perspective that all the bloggers in the room could appreciate. Speaking on Joe Zee's show, All on the Line which is in the middle of taping it's second season, he talked about his experience questioning 50 girls as research for Nicole Miller, and every single girl said they look to blogs for style inspiration. That a testament to the power of blogs.

All in all this was a great conference that taught us a lot and fostered lots of networks. Bravo, Coveted Media!

D.I.Y - Band of Outsiders Inspired Skirt

Yes, we've seen the super stylish Joanna Hillman, senior market editor of Harper's Bazaar, wear that gorgeous striped skirt from Band of Outsiders on just about every fashion blog imaginable. Every time I saw it I fell deeper and deeper in love. Then one day it hit me like an epiphany..."can't you make something like that?"

Yes! I can make that fabulous and expensive skirt!

Before we go any further, I'll let you know now that I'm no one's seamstress and the most I have sewn was a button on a jacket...and it wasn't my best work. So after my epiphany, I figured that all I needed was ribbon in varying colors and patterns and my trusty heat bonding hemming tape.

Hemming tape is a dream for non-sewers. You simply place it between the materials you want to bond together and iron over it for about 5-10 seconds. And voila! It's stuck like glue, because...it's basically glue.

Armed with my hemming tape and ribbon in similar colors to the Band of Outsiders skirt, I got to work on a mini skirt I already owned from Forever21.

Step 1

Lay out the ribbon in your desired pattern, I tried to stay as close as possible to the skirt Joanna Hillman wore.

Step 2

Take your hemming tape and place it underneath your first ribbon, peeling off the paper backing. Cut it to size (doubling it if it needs to be wider) and iron one ribbon at a time horizontally.

Step 3

Once you have completed the entire front of the skirt, cut the excess ribbon from each side. Then take one ribbon to cover the frayed edges and run it vertically down the side securing it with the same hemming tape. (Of course you can do the back of the skirt too, I'm just a lazy bones and thought the front would suffice.)

Step 4

Lala's Full Court Life

This is madness, madness I tell ya! First a two-part Basketball Wives reunion show, then the Premiere of Lala's Full Court Life about Lala and Carmelo's life after the fabulous star-studded wedding. Vh1 definitely has us in the headlock right now with so many guilty pleasures.

Technically, Lala is a basketball wife as well, but I'm sure we would never catch Mrs. Anthony launching drinks across the room and brawling in European night clubs. She and Carmelo Anthony have become one of the most popular celebrity couples even passing Jay-z and Beyonce on some lists, and I believe we can credit that to the fact that they really have a good hold on their relationship. No rumors, no twitter rants, and no drama...at least not aired out for the world to see.

Lala Valquez has become bff's with reality super-star Kim Kardashian, and although they both have reality shows, basketball husbands and allowed the world in to witness their weddings...Lala doesn't seem to be as desperate to be a star. Maybe because she had a legitimate career before Carmelo and no sex tape??? Just a guess.

Victoria's Latest Secret: The Heartbreaker

A few weeks ago I went to the Genesee Valley with my friend to PAY MY PHONE BILL, and somehow we ended up in Victoria's Secret. The lovely Victoria Secret sales girl quickly told us that "these body sprays and lotions are all under $5" so our "just looking" turned into "can you get me a shopping bag" in less than 2 minutes.

After cleaning up on the Victoria Secret fragrance side of the store we moseyed on over to the PINK area which made me realize I wanted another demi scoop-neck pushup bra that I fell in love with. I soon figured out that it wasn't in stock so the sales girl directed me to the new bra by PINK, the Hearbreaker, that was similar to what I was looking for.

But what she should have said was:

"Here's our new Heartbreaker bra from Pink by Victoria's Secret that you will fall madly in love with and want to wear everyday and have in every color because you'll wonder where all this new found cleavage came from."

Because that is exactly what happened.

It's a deep plunge push-up bra, that has just enough push to make things look very nice without having your girls obnoxiously sky high. I busted out of the dressing room in excitement to show my best friend and she was amazed! "I would wear that everyday of my life", she said. I would definitely suggest this bra to the girls who's cup does not runneth over. I think this is why we were so obsessed, because my girls are not large or in charge of anything and the fact that they looked so good sold us right away.

Dissecting Otis [UPDATE]

Kanye and Jay-z has the industry stirred up with excitement as they've just released their album "Watch the Throne" which was the talk of the Internet when it dropped on iTunes before making its way to store shelves. Lately I've been venturing away from my overplayed iTunes library and my same 5 pandora stations to listen to different radio stations (still via iTunes) from Atlanta, DC and even Carolina. And the song in the HEAVIEST rotation? Otis, of course.

This song is a great break away from the stoners (Wiz and Big Sean) and the club hoppers (Rosco Dash and...all the rappers) and the video made us all feel like we had a million dollars to blow and not a care in the world. Along with most, I enjoyed the carefree-ness and the Transformers looking Maybach, but Jay-z's outfit in the Otis video was all I could really think about.

So simple. So relaxed. So...youthful in a mature way. According to The Well Dressed Man, Jay-z wore a custom Balmain t-shirt with a dark slim fit jean (slim guys, not skinny...don't get scared) similar to these Levi's , the first Air Jordan's in the black and red color-way and a custom Don C Yankee's Snapback hat.

Don't let the simpleness fool you, Jay's whole outfit is valued over $700 (excluding jewelry). And if you didn't catch it, both Jay and Kanye wore gold chains tucked in their crisp white shirts. Very understated for them...especially Ye.

This video was a big change from their "All Black Everything" just a few years ago. But change is good, right? What I love most about Jay-z's outfit in Otis is that it's such a man's outfit. This is what a man would wear without a woman's input. It's clean and put together without him looking like he's more into fashion than...Beyonce. Today I'll keep it short and sweet (pun intended) with 10 body con dresses (body conscience, meaning very fitted) and mini skirts to love and own! Word of advice for those who are like me and lack curves, go for a skirt that flares slightly. If it flares you can get away with your skirt being slightly shorter and it will add the illusion of curves.

Gaining the coveted title of Mercedes Benz Presents designer, Lisa Vogel of LUXE Swimwear showed a collection that resembled a seasoned resort traveler who can pull off a chic look with ease.

Models looked ready for a private cruise as they showed off sun hats, sunglasses, luxurious cover ups and sleek feather details. The same feathers we saw on the runway were also given as a gift to all those who caught the show from front row.

Vogel kept all body types in mind with lots of one-pieces, and swimsuits that accentuated the positive (the bust and back) and delicately hid trouble spots (tummy area). Not like your average full coverage suits that are often too matronly for most, LUXE did swim tops that draped beautifully with modern patterns that we all can wear and love.

Not only did I like the modern designs going down the runway, while looking over the run of show colors such as "seafoam" "sunset" "sand" and "ocean" made me want to take a bathing suit and hit the beach myself.

LUXE also confirmed a trend that we saw all fashion week which was animal print. Floating down the runway were gorgeous featherweight cover-ups in sophisticated animal prints, including the perfect poolside piece the Foxy Lady Maxi Skirt.

In conclusion, when wearing this collection be prepared to turn heads because everyone will be wondering how you look so flawless and confident in your super-chic swimwear.

Mara Hoffman: Leader of the Pack

Hypnotizing patterns, billowing fabrics, and flattering draping were only a few things that had the audience drooling at the Mara Hoffman Cruise 2012 fashion show during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim in Miami, FL. Before this show even began I knew it would be a packed house so I hurried to the press registration table only to be greeted by a line that went half way down 18th street.

Anxiously waiting, I recognized Whitney Port, from The Hills and The City, with friends and she urged them to hurry because she needed to get back stage.

Once in the Grande Cabana, the energy was slightly different from the other fashion shows. This is a designer that always shows flawless collections not only in Miami, but during New York fashion week as well. So we were all giddy with excitement.

And of course Mara didn't disappoint. Taking inspiration from her travels to the Egyptian ruins and Mexico, Hoffman created colorful original prints cleverly named "Totem" "King Tut" and "Tiki". Not only did she introduce new prints, she showed new swim styles from a high-waisted bikini to a macrame one-piece.

I was pleased to see more ready-to-wear pieces added to this show. After so many swimwear shows you start yearning for more material. A slinky tube top maxi dress in the "King Tut" print and a show stopping neon coral silk chiffon romper gave me the fix I was looking for.

A giant tasseled tote bag put me over the edge. I wanted to kiss Mara for taking us on such an amazing journey. There's no telling what she has in store for us this September at New York Fashion Week.

Beach Beauty’s Dream: A. Che’ Swimwear

Hailing from the home of the infamous Kardashians, Amanda Che' of A. Che' Swimwear designed a beautiful collection for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week-Swim in Miami, Fl.

In the Grand Cabana of the Raleigh Hotel models strutted down the runway in snake print one-pieces and interesting 2-piece bathing suits. Varying colors of paint splashed across their bodies accented animal print suits cleverly named "Into the Wild" and "Fatal Charm".

The Dylan Tank, which is perfect to throw on over your bathing suit or even your favorite bandeau top, came in a gorgeous "Endless Summer Peridot" (or green) that compliments every one's summer tan.

A unique style that I was drawn to was the Emma Halter, which is a halter neck bikini top that wraps around multiple times under the bust. It was so much more interesting than your average bikini. As was the Monroe halter (named after Marilyn I'm sure) which created a wide keyhole, crossing in the front of the neck instead of the back.

Altogether this was a very fun yet mellow collection that is very reminiscent of Southern California.

Cool Girl Chic: Cia. Maritima Swimwear

One of my favorites from 2012 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim was hands down the brazilian swimwear line Cia. Maritima. Denim shorts, mixed prints, fringe and tie-die swimsuits brought an incredible youthful energy to fashion week that we all were dying for.

This was the first time during fashion week that I saw a floral patterned top with leopard print bottoms, and I was definitely intrigued. Gold metal trim detailed the chic flowing cover-ups as fringe dangled from mockinis and oversized boho bags. The colors were vibrant lime greens, pinks, and animal prints on the bikinis with low slung belts around the tunics for a slight rocker edge.

Along with blowing us away with an amazing bathing suit show, Cia. Maritima was very generous with their gift bags which included a patterned bikini with gold hardware. You would think other designers would include a swimsuit, cover up or even flip flops...but only Cia. Maritima.

All week long I multitasked as best as possible, recording the show while trying to take notes but for this show I had to just stop and enjoy the show because it was that amazing. Enough talking...take a look for yourself.

Poolside Perfection

As I sat at the A. Che' Swimwear fashion show during MBFW-Swim feverishly setting up my tripod and camera, Barbara Warren was sitting next to me and said "Let me guess, you're a blogger?" I replied that I wasn't sure if that was good or bad and she assured me that she meant that in the best possible way. I inquired about what she did and she told me she was one half of the year old eye-wear company Lumete.

Warren pulled out a stunning eye glass case in the shape of a butterfly and out came the Attic Safari style from Lumete in a color called "crushed berries"...I was in awe. It's not everyday that you meet a sun glass designer so I really didn't know what to expect, but what I got was a quality pair of handmade sunglasses. We exchanged information and she invited me to view her full collection at the Delano Hotel in Cabana 2. (No one passes up an opportunity to hang out at the Delano, especially in a Cabana)

Greeted with white wine, I stepped into an incredible space filled with a variety of sunglasses and bathing suits. Warren showed me all 5 styles of the Lumete collection and each style comes in 4 different colors. With really romantic and inspired names such as the Wanderling which means traveler, I was very interested to learn more about the collection.

Lumete Eyewear seems to solve every problem that mass produced eyewear creates. They're scratch resistant, handmade, adorned with Swarovski crystals, and they even come in a treasure bag that has all the essentials to help you care for your glasses.

I was also happy to meet Julie Wheat, designer of the swimwear line Cavortress, who teams up with Lumete for photo shoots and promotional events such as this. She walked me through her collection that imports all it's fabric and hardware from Italy (which means it's the best quality) and manufactures every piece in the USA.

Wheat has a background in graphic design communication and education which made it an easy decision to design all her own prints that are slightly 50's inspired.

As you know, I hardly go anywhere with out getting video footage, so I sat down with the two designers for an impromptu interview to get more information about their brands.

Beach Luxury at Caffe’ Swimwear

Front row at Caffe' Swimwear for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week-Swim 2012 was definitely a treat! Sheer cover-ups floated down the runway in rich colors that where dying to be on someone's yacht. The gorgeous bikini details and big beach bags (that can easily be worn anywhere) added to the exotic vacation feel of the show.

This collection really spoke to me personally because I'm big on a great cut and fit with just enough detail to catch your eye. This collection had all that and more. A pink bikini with a twisted blue detail on the hip, a one piece orange one shoulder swimsuit and the off the shoulder short cover-ups (that again, you can wear anywhere) got the crowd all giddy inside.

The fabrics varied from a blue, orange and brown spotted print, a bright yellow with a tropical flower print, and a amazing brown and cream animal print.

Ending the show with two solid blue bikinis, the 2012 Caffe' show left me with the thought of easy beach luxury.

Every Beach Needs White Sands

Flirty and feminine are the words I would use to describe the White Sands Australia fashion show during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week-Swim 2012. Being my very first show during MBFW I was really looking forward to what White Sands would bring over from Australia.

The models reminded me of ballerinas with a top bun, feathers in their hair and shoes that wrapped up their leg. The swimsuits varied from zebra printed bikinis with cut out bikini tops, a sleek high cut one piece in black and high waisted bikini bottoms in a floral print.

The cover-ups came in zebra print and a light pink and green floral pattern. Ruffles and soft silhouettes kept everything sweet and easy to wear even if you're not a 5'9 model.

I must say I did fall in love with the collection and I'm predicting that White Sands will be the designer of choice for many beach goers in 2012.

“L” Stands for Love

Monica Wise of L*Space swimwear took us on a trip around the world at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week-Swim. With suitcases in tow, the models drifted down the runway in ethnic inspired swimsuits, crochet and sheer cover-ups in small colorful prints.

L*Space has been seen on Kim and Kourtney Kardashian, Gwen Stephani and Jessica Alba and Adrienne Bailon was one of the celebs in the audience awaiting to see the new collection.

After welcoming us to the journey, the show began with some amazing suits. I personally loved the deep v-neck one piece with fringe around the bust line in coral and grey, and the maxi length cover-ups with a split from under the bust line to the hem caught my eye as well.

Wise worked well with coral this season, adorning a coral bikini with gold hardware on the hips and pairing a solid coral bikini top with white bottoms. There was also a grey bikini with lime green piping that was very minimalist yet playful.

Though I loved the coral, there wasn't one common color or pattern throughout the collection that stood out as a signature. Seeing that her inspiration was "world travel" everything was very eclectic as if the models had traveled the world and put their favorite finds together.

Wise caught us all by surprise when dancers come out to the new women's anthem "Who Run the World" by Beyonce as an introduction to the second half of the show. During the second half, models pranced with bare feet, sand on their bottoms and cute umbrellas.

Closing the show, one brave model went topless covering herself with only a sun hat to go with her peach bikini bottoms. Which brought me to one phrase to describe the show: A free spirited citizen of the world.

Now that we are well into the heat of summer, Liv Lux wanted to give you all a treat! It’s sandal time- and we hope that your hands and feet have been looking equally groomed and proper! Here’s the recipe for a quick salon worthy manicure & pedicure. And to help you achieve the ultimate nails- there’s also a giveaway!!!

SUPPLIES

Nail Polish Remover/Nail File/Nail Block/Cuticle Remover/Cotton Balls/Assorted Nail Polish Colors/ Base & Top Coat Polish/Nail Clipper/Pumice Stone/Nail Oil/Vaseline or Shea Butter/Bowl & Large Foot Dish of Soapy Warm Water/Towel

PREP WORK

Make sure you’re in a relaxing, well lit location with the supplies close by. Using a few cotton balls, remove all old polish from hands and feet with nail polish remover. Try a gentle formula without acetone to prevent brittle nails. Next, place your feet in the soapy water and let them soak for about 5 minutes. Take them out and remove any dead skin with a pumice stone. Swipe all ten toes with cotton balls soaked in cuticle remover. The remover dissolves the cuticles and makes for easier removal with a cuticle stick. Rinse off your feet in the water and then dry completely with a towel. Apply Vaseline or Shea Butter to the entire foot except the toes!

CLIP-BUFF- FILE

Using the toe-nail clipper, create a clean edge to the nails and trim them down. No need to have bear claws like some women online (Google long toe nails and get ready to weep). Next, grab your nail block and file your nails to a round or oval shape; square shaping on the toe nails easily lead to snagging and chipping. With the roughest side of the block, start to buff your nails. Use a gentle side-to-side motion when doing this to smooth out any major ridges your nails may have. Next use the smooth surface of the block to polish your nails until they shine. This step is important to ensure that an even surface is available when you’re ready to apply polish.

APPLY POLISH

Now it’s time to polish! Apply a thin layer of base coat and allow drying. Apply a coat of your nail color, followed by another coat after two minutes. Now seal it all in with a top coat and a drop of oil to each nail. ALLOW TO DRY!!! LIKE 20 MINUTES!!! Lol Otherwise-your hard work will go to waste! After you’re done with your feet- use the same steps to pamper the hands, minus the pumice stone! Allow time for everything to dry before buttoning up that shirt or putting on your strappy stiletto heels, you don’t want any smudges. This Mani/Pedi combo at home saves you between $20-$80 buc

I first got hooked on rings during my first stint in New York and I hit China town up like it was nobody's business. I know your probably thinking "Forever 21's rings are $3-4 and look good too" ...true they may look good while in the store or your first few times wearing it, but I've never had a ring from Forever, or Charlotte Russe for that matter, that didn't turn my finger green. Although you can put a thin layer of tape around the band to prevent that from happening. #Tip

Escape to the Circus

Guess what? Brooklyn Circus is not just some mystical place that only exists online and in the posts of StreetEtiquette.com. In a quaint area of Brooklyn is The Brooklyn Circus men's shop that we were dying to see for ourselves. After finishing brunch at Buttermilk Channel (click here if you missed that) I already knew that I wanted to surprise my babe and head over to Brooklyn Circus. Our friend, Corey, came up with the bright idea to walk the 15 blocks, so we grudgingly agreed and trekked through the neighborhood. It was a great idea actually because ironically there were 4 guys and 4 girls and we randomly switched walking partners, continuing our easy conversations from brunch.

When we arrived at the store every one's mouth dropped because it appeared to be closed, and of course all side-eyes were darting in my direction. But thankfully Brandon from Brooklyn Circus appeared, oozing the vintage and tailored style that the store is famously known for.

Seeking rest from the nice long stroll, we all seemed to immediately get comfortable in the space. Soaking in the dark wood, aged leather and creative decor (like old pencil sharpeners) we befriended Brandon and picked his brain with lots of questions like "how do you tie a bowtie?" ...and he didn't hesitate to show us.

I checked out their website before hand and I had a pair of stripped Keds on my agenda. Sadly they didn't have my size and I had to settle for the BKc button pins, which I love.

Brandon gave us a little background info about the store, the brand and the creator, Ouigi, and he also told us a bit about the neighborhood. The area was very lowkey and surrounded by brownstones instead of countless bars, restaurants and shops.

I think we all enjoyed our visit to see the Circus, and seeing the uniqueness of the space and all the elements that help define the culture of the brand makes me appreciate Brooklyn Circus all the more. If you don't plan on being in the Brooklyn area anytime soon, swing by their website and pick up a few summer essentials. Like these beauties...

Good Eats: Buttermilk Channel Brooklyn, NY

During my last trip to NY for the CFDA Awards (if you missed that click HERE) I was determined to get all my friends together in one place. There has been too many times where I fly in, lose track of time and visited no one. So this time I planned early and made reservations for brunch! (Fancy, right? lol)

After eliminating places that were either too high for my budget or who's menu didn't do anything for me, I switched my google search from "new york brunch" to "brooklyn brunch" and voila! My cute little brunch bff was found.

Buttermilk Channel at 524 Court St. in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood of Brooklyn has a clean and inviting atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating and familiar foods that have an updated twist. When I checked out their menu online and saw pancakes, pork-chops and waffles and Mimosas and Bellini's included with your meal...I was on the phone before anyone could udder the word brunch.

Because I'm a crazy lady, I made reservations for 11 a.m. on saturday morning knowing that we would make it into town at 6-7 a.m. after a 12 hour drive. But I was determined to make the most of my time in New York.

Well, needless to say we were late for our reservation. After discovering the L train wasn't working, we relunctantly went for a gypsy cab who's driver was old enough to have seen Jesus with his own eyes. Getting to Court St. at around 11:50, Ms. Head-Honcho at Buttermilk Channel kindly let me know that I was an hour late but she would do her best to seat us. And she did! I was so appreciative that Buttermilk Channel put up with my tardiness because I would have been embarrassed to tell my friends that came from Jersey and Harlem "we have to find somewhere else to go."

So we got right down to business. Our table quickly filled up with fried pork-chops and cheddar waffles, hot sausage pepper and onions, short stacks and eggs huntington. Oh! ...and Mimosas lol.

It was the perfect atmosphere. Great food, even better conversations and a very gracious staff. I suggest you all go visit Buttermilk Channel if you're ever in the New York area. Many of my friends that live in the area never heard of Buttermilk Channel and were pleasantly surprised. So if you live in the area...please go explore in Carroll Gardens and report back to let me know what other good things you find!

Nair Moisturizing Face Cream (For Upper Lip, Chin & Face)

Depilatory hair removal creams have been on the market for a long time. They offer fast and thorough elimination of the hair on every part of the body. This particular cream is formulated for the facial area and is marketed as “sensitive”. Depilatory creams can never be sensitive. They essentially burn the hair off of your face. I’ve used this product in addition to waxing and shaving on my upper lip and chin areas for the past 6 years now. It’s not a safe product really.

The key ingredients in this hair removal cream are an alkali, and an acid: calcium hydroxide and Potassium thiogycolate. I can’t believe I was putting this stuff on my face! It can cause irritation, and allergic reactions in some, even those who have used it before without prior effects.

When it comes to hair removal creams, use at your own risk. I’d advise you to seek a professional esthetician that provides waxing services; or a certified Electrologist to assist the lasting removal of the hair from your lip and chin areas. Waxing is a quick, easy, and relatively cheap way to remove unwanted facial hair. It hurts a little (I’m a punk, I know) but will grant a few weeks of solitude from looking like Grizzly Adams. (I know you’re going to Google Grizzly Adams once you finish reading this).

The electrolysis procedure consists of several sessions where methods of heat or chemicals are used to permanently destroy the hair follicle. It is very costly initially, but will give the results that many of us want- zero mustaches! It’s your body and your money. However you decide to remove hair from your face and body, be smart and be safe!

CFDA Awards 2011

"What's the CFDA Awards?" asked all my former friends as I jumped for joy while telling them I would get to go and help out at the star studded celebration. The CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Awards are sorta like the Oscars or Grammy's but for fashion designers. And all the designers bring one of their favorite starlets who wear the designer's most loved creation.

This year the awards were hosted by Anderson Cooper (yes, the CNN reporter) and Lady Gaga and Marc Jacobs we're two of the many to be honored for the night.

So I know you want to know what I did right? Well, I laughed it up with Diane Von Furstenburg, chatted with Alexander Wang and shared diet tips with Zac Pozen.

What?? Why the smirk of disbelief??

Ok maybe I laughed at Diane for her jokes while practicing her speech, shared a few words with Alex and admired Zac's newly slim frame from 3 feet away. It's sorta the same as what I said before, lol.

Anywho...the Swarovski Crystals cascading down the podium and amazing video tributes made me fall in love with the Alice Tully hall and I would have been just fine making a small pallet in the corner and spending the rest of my days there waiting on next year's awards to roll around. America’s Pride and Joy: Michael Kors

When asked who my favorite designers are, I'm sure people look for some exotic and exciting answer. Well what I've learned through answering this question for the last 4-5 years is that I am truly an American girl. Along with Alexander Wang and Isaac Mizrahi, Michael Kors always spews out before my mind totally has time to process the question.

That sweet Michael produces some of the best clothes and accessories that doesn't just define the country club and equestrian set (cough, Ralph Lauren) but really defines what pure American dressing is all about. Clean lines, great quality and construction, and just fun pieces to wear.

I'll never forget Michael's Spring 2010 collection with the bright colored pieces with cut-outs and lucite jewelry. Classic with such a fun twist and every single fashion publication was swooning over that collection. But I really can't get his buckle details out of my head! It all started with these shoes...

I dreamt about these shoes. Planned outfits around these shoes. Stalked these shoes via online stores and the fashion closet at Marie Claire. Soon I fell to my knees and prayed and said to myself "this too shall pass". My obsession did in fact pass...and then came this:

Ok, Mike. I see what you're trying to do...and it's working. I have a penny jar dedicated strictly to buying your accessories. Yes people acccessories, plural, because not only does Kors have to die for shoes but his watches are a staple in thousands of women's wardrobe. It's perfect to wear alone or piled up with bracelets and bangles. Classic, as always, so they can be worn for years and years and passed on to your daughters. They're not cheap (ranging from $150-300) but they are a great investment for a longtime stylish wardrobe accessory.

I'm sure it's great to have a collection that people drool over, but for all of the fashion industry to love and adore you because of your awesome personality and giving spirit is an even bigger blessing. During New York Fashion Week in February, Kors celebrated his 30th year in business and everyone had nothing but kind words for Michael. Check out this video below.

Most people working a normal 9-5 are looking to retire after 30 years (or 25 if you're Oprah), but hopefully Michael will continue to give us American design to love and wear for many years to come. Or at least until I'm able to stock up on several pieces.

L.A. Colors 5 Color Metallic Eye-shadow Palette (Tease)

Truly this has been the best inexpensive buy I’ve made in a long time. This creamy eye-shadow from L.A. Colors posses highly pigmented hues. It comes in 12 different palettes, each providing 5 amazing shades. The color palette that I use most frequently is Tease. The colors are crazy bright and produce an intense shade on my lids. Application is smooth and even.

The Tease palette comes with a shimmery Yellow, Orange, Pink, Blue, and Green. When I wear this shadow, I always get compliments. My brown eyes are played up effortlessly and I stand out in the crowd whether I’m at a party or at the grocery store. Its instant vamp!

L.A. Colors is a line derived from Beauty 21 Cosmetics manufacturing company. The company has been producing affordable makeup since 1985. They are based out of California and have L.A Girl, and L.A. Colors cosmetics distributed throughout North America, South America, and Japan. Their website gives numerous statements that brag “superior quality products at affordable prices” and I couldn’t agree more. The best fact of all is that L.A. Colors don’t test their products on animals. A makeup company that creates dope products and they’re cruelty free? Now we all can respect that! I highly encourage the use of their eye, lip, and nail merchandise-not too keen on the foundation though!

L.A. Colors 5 Metallic Eye-shadow in Tease $4 at Rue 21, Family Dollar, and Drugstores Nationwide…. Family dollar has the palettes for $1.99 a piece!

I don’t want to leave you without an easy tutorial: Rainbow Eyes Tutorial: You can aim for a dramatic look or a muted one it all depends on the coverage you want.

Muted Rainbow Eyes

Apply a base to eyelids using a brush or fingertips.

You can use concealer or a smidge of foundation. Blend onto your lids. This will provide the base for your shadows, and prevent creasing during wear.

Take the L.A. Colors 5 Metallic Palette in Tease and begin with the green color. With the sponge applicator or an eye-shadow brush apply the green to the inner corner of eye. Repeat for other eye.

Next, using the pink. Apply a thin stroke of color along the lash line. Repeat for other eye.

Take the yellow and brush that lightly to the inner section of your lids slightly blending it with the green that was previously applied. Same for your other eye.

The orange should be applied last and blended at the end of the lids.

Take black liquid eyeliner and place a line along the lash line, fanning out towards the end for a nice effect. And brush on two coats of mascara.

You’re done! Simple muted Rainbow Eyes for the brink of Spring! Great for wear at work or during a day in the sun.

Tip: A nice peach tinted gloss or lipstick would work well with this look.

Dramatic Rainbow Eyes

Apply a base to eyelids using a brush or fingertips.

Take L.A. Colors 5 Metallic Palette in Tease and begin with the blue color. Use the sponge applicator tip or a brush and apply along the lash line, beginning at the inner corner and working out to the outer lid. The creaminess of the shadow will help in coverage. Repeat for other eye.

Next using the pink, apply a generous amount to the inner corner just above where the blue was placed, blending as you go. Repeat for other eye.

Apply green at the middle of the lid blending with the pink all the way out to the end. Same for the other eye.

Now, you can choose to carry the blue out with a flat-tipped brush to your bottom lash line (or water line) Or for a fresh surprise use the orange shadow.

Take black liquid eyeliner and place a line along the lash line, fanning out towards the end for a nice effect.

Now is the time to apply a strip of false lashes and a few coats of mascara.

You’re done! Simple Dramatic Rainbow Eye for a night out on the town or when you’re not feeling so conservative!

You’ll be the mystery flavored Skittle!

Tip: If brows are not naturally thick, use a brown eyebrow pencil and brow powder to lightly fill in brows. Blend with fingertip or brow brush.

Head Trip: Best Spring Hats

Some people may call them hats...but I call them a friend in the time of need. On two occasions in the past 2 months I have had some cry-able hair situations that were saved by my friends in the time of need. FYI, a cry-able hair situation is when you're pressed for time and your hair is no way no how getting to a presentable state.

I know many women may shy away from hats in fear of wearing the wrong style or just because it may feel silly (like sunglasses feel on me, I know...it's weird) but this season there are some really great styles that just about anyone can wear whether in a time of need or just to add an interesting layer to your look.

I recently bought a big floppy sun hat from Banana Republic that I love because #1- it's striped and I'm a pure sucker for stripes and #2 it's so dramatic, it adds interest to the simplest of outfits. @TheClosetStudio encouraged me to get it, because me being the princess of cheap (after the queen, Tyra) thought that $21 on sale was a little pricey for a hat that I'm SURE I could find at Wal-Mart. "That's a great price for a hat, do you know how much I paid for one of my hats?", he said. I'm thinking..."girl's clothing is always cheaper soooooo, that doesn't count."

...But when I needed to get ready for a banquet in 30mins or less, my new friend in the time of need came through like we'd been bff's for ages. And seeing that the Royal Wedding had just happened a few days ago, everyone kept jokingly asking did I go. I even heard a lady tell her friend "See, I need to start wearing more hats". If they only new the mess that lied beneath.

So I guess I can thank my bad hair days for this post, and you can thank my friends in the time of need for these hat styles below that you can purchase for yourself :-)

Cruise Control: Parent Proof Sounds

My mom and I don't always agree on what is “good music” and what's not. Each time she summons me to be her chauffeur for the day, an uneasy feeling rushes over me and one question consumes my thoughts: What kinda of music will I play in the car? The radio? That's definitely not an option for me. I of course can't play Frank Ocean's Nostalgia/Ultra. One too many F-bombs. MGMT? A bit unorthodox for her. Cudi's 2^nd installment of Man On The Moon? No, she'll be convinced that her beloved only child is a stoner. So, after countless awkward car rides, I had to figure something out. Whether you have a George Lopez type of mother who doesn't mind a few expletives here and there or a more traditional Claire Huxtable mom who'd have a mini-heart attack at the mere mention of any sexually suggestive activities, I'm here to help. Read on for tips for the next time you're driving around Ms. Daisy, I mean your mom.

Tip #1 – Preview, preview, preview. I wouldn't suggest listening to an album for the first time with mom present. A slew of inappropriate things could spill forth from of your speakers. Then what? That awkward silence and that facial expression of hers that says, “This is what you listen to?”.

Tip #2 – Moms love nostalgia. Your mom probably loves the music from her teens and early 20s. It reminds her of when she was the bee's knees around town. Do your research and find out if she was more Sam Cooke or more Luther Vandross, cop the greatest hits and you'll be sure to get that approving look from mom that reads, “What do you know about this?”. Tell her, “Suaizy taught me.”

Tip #3 – Let mom take the reins. As painful as this may be, let mom decide the trip playlist. I know you're thinking, but it's my car and I'm doing all the driving. I should control the sounds! I have combo skin, so I use two different types of bronzer formulas and just remember to set with a finishing-spray afterward to keep my face from looking like its melting! Combination skin tends to have both dry and oily areas, so the fix is simple. Use a cream to powder bronzer on your dry skin, and a powdered version on the oily parts. Experimentation is key, so take the time to play with a few products to find what’s best for you.

Tip: Try not to use shimmery bronzers on your T-zone if you have oily skin. This only magnifies the shine. T-zone= middle of your forehead all the way down to the bridge of your nose x four finger width across the center of your nose.

When working with any type of foundation, blush, or bronzer always take the necessary steps to ensure an even coverage. Wash, and exfoliate the face, neck, chest to remove dead skin and blemishes. If you don’t, the makeup will not hide a crunchy face, it will enhance the particular imperfection. So scrub, scrub, scrub, (gently!). Have the right tools on hand, liquid bronzers require a sponge, brush or even fingers to apply evenly; dry bronzers need a powder brush.

Not too many posts ago, I wrote about how love songs had become noticeably scarce in our beloved pop culture. I equate Spring with love, and apparently I'm not alone in that thinking. Dare I go out on a limb and say love songs are making a comeback? I don't know whether or not this is true for radio (because I don't listen to music via that medium) but the internet seems to be quietly buzzing with the kind of sweet, syrupy ditties I adore. Disclaimer: these aren't the love songs our parents and grandparents knew and loved. Instead, several of these amorous tunes skim the surface of love, alluding to it only long enough to satisfy a rhyme pattern. But in this 21^st century “have your cake and eat it too, who's concerned about a boo?” world we live in, I'll take what I can get in this department. Welcome back, love songs!

Liquid Love x Chris Turner I had the opportunity of meeting Chris recently when I opened for Bilal in Detroit, MI. He sang backgrounds for the man of the night. A few months later I finally had a chance to explore some of his releases. Reminiscent of a young Marvin Gaye, sensual and soulful. Vinyl crackle included.

Breakfast of Champions: French Toast

I've finally come down from my food high and I haven't cooked too much of anything lately besides cereal. It was fun while it lasted, lol. I did go out with a bang though...or maybe a sizzle. I made homemade french toast that seemed to melt away troubles and make you lose track of time (because my boyfriend forgot he had to go to class after he was good and full from my late afternoon breakfast).

I know you want to know why my french toast was the bomb. My secret was.....

an uncut loaf of bread from the bakery section of Krogers.

As you can see it was super affordable and I could make my slices as thick or thin as I pleased which was my whole reason for buying this type of bread. I wanted heartier sandwiches and french toast, instead of the flimsy stuff you get from pre-sliced bread.

French Toast Ingredients:

2-4 eggs (depends on the amount of toast)

Milk

Cinnamon (optional)

Butter

Bread (obviously)

Mix the eggs and milk together (of course no one taught me exact measurements so I just make sure I put much less milk than eggs). Once mixed, sprinkle in cinnamon to get restaurant style french toast.

Melt a generous amount of butter or margarine in a skillet on medium-high heat.

French toast is one my favorite breakfast meal and my mom showed me how to make it when I was probably 12, but it was always too soggy when I cooked it, so I gave it a break for awhile. Then when visiting my grandmother in Florida, she told me the trick was to put a top on the skillet while it cooks, and to dunk the bread swiftly.

The trick is to coat both sides of the bread without soaking the bread too much. Quickly flip the bread in the batter to avoid Doni's soggy french toast from yesteryear.

In a fairly large skillet, you should be able to cook 3 pieces at a time.

Fix your desired sides, and now you're eating like a true champion. Super simple (because I'm no professional) and crazy good.

Ms. Butterworth never had a better companion. And no, I didn't save you any...hence the recipe. Make your own! :-)

To the Max: Spring Maxi Skirts!

How blessed were we to get 3 out of 4 days of sunshine?! I hope you enjoyed that kind of weather where you're at. Those days really gave me spring fever and got me all excited to do a little spring shopping. (Uh oh, trouble)

One trend that is not new this spring is the maxi dress. Longer length dresses swept through women's closets making appearances everywhere from the beach to the street and though comfy and modest, not all maxi dresses were flattering in my opinion.

Most come in halter and tube top styles and free fall their way to the floor. Where's the shape? Where's the accentuation? The maxi dress is a great easy piece but if you have a larger mid-section the maxi dress tends to exaggerate that, and if you're short...it exaggerates that as well.

So how do you enjoy this trend you ask? The Maxi Skirt!

Breaking up the the maxi dress into separates allows you to create the needed shapes to accentuate your body's needs. Maxi skirts are also more versatile. They can range from a full skirt to a slim spandex silhouette, and you can get them high waisted or slung low on the hips.

Of course I have to give a plethora (haha love that word) of skirts to choose from so you can sweep into spring with the best of them.

Flaunt Those Freckles!

In my profession I have worked with a diverse group of people thus far. Nearly everyone that I come across that has freckles hate them! I don’t understand why, because I find them to be absolutely beautiful! For those of you who have freckles-please stop trying to cover them under loads of foundation or fade them away with creams! Here’s a little reassurance if you need some…..

Freckles have always been a signature of precious little girls with curly hair and cherry lips; not so much when you’re grown. Many people will tell you that only Caucasian, red haired women have freckles and that is a lie. They appear on the face and bodies of people from all ethnicities. It is genetic in some cases, but factually an occurrence of sun damage. The tiny “dots” are truly clusters of melanin that have been warped from the sun. This explains why many people with freckles tend to have sensitive skin. Advice for that-Is to always wear a sunscreen; 30spf or higher will grant you enough coverage from the sun.

There are the chosen few celebrities that have freckles and flaunt them proudly. If they can look stunning, so can you. Freckles are not a curse; they are unique and sexy. Love your face ladies and gents, here are the basics....

Concealer: When using concealer, you want to go with something that is not heavy and will allow the skin to “breathe”. A nice cream concealer can be used to cover under eye circles-you don’t want to use on your freckles-let them shine!

Foundation: Foundation should be light and sheer. This way your true complexion and shade is able to show and there is no overcast/ashy application to the face. A few drops of liquid foundation and a SPF formulated moisturizer can be mixed together and used on the face. This will provide an even, yet natural hue to the area. Mineral foundation in a small application will work great also.

Eye-Shadow: Eyes can be played up dark, depending on your skin color. If you are pale or beige with freckles, using brown eyeliner and light brown brow powders are best. If you were to use black, it could cast shadows under the eyes and make you appear dreary or tired. You don’t want a harsh look. As for everyone, choose eye-shadow colors that would perfectly bring out your eye color.

Blush/Bronzers: Keep it light! Application has to be to a minimum to avoid covering your freckles. Too much blush and you can end up looking like a Connect the Dot coloring sheet! I Kid! I Kid! Use a cream to powder formula or powder blush and use a very small amount. Make sure to blend. Don’t use shimmery blush or bronzer! This will create a “haze” over your freckles and won’t flatter at all. Peachy, coral, and slightly orange colored blushes will complement the skin easily.

Interview: Brandon McCall for Blues x Five

Discovering new music is a special occasion. The moment you hear something new and different, a little magic happens. You feel a connection to the music as if it was created exclusively for you. It tells your story. It fits your mood. It becomes the soundtrack of your life. Such has been the case with a series of playlists I recently discovered. Wafting through the internet one afternoon I stumbled upon them and what I heard challenged everything my ears previously regarded as good music. Downloading and listening to every list and every track became a priority. Much of the music isn't new. In fact, most of it is pretty old, but it is presented in a new way. Last week I caught up with the man behind the music and the magic, Brandon McCall (Twitter: @beenswank). Have a read and have a listen.

Suai: Okay, the basics: hometown, age, occupation?

Brandon McCall: I'm a 26 year old entrepreneur from Richmond, VA.

S: What's the Story behind your playlist series name, Blues x Five?

BM: I established Blues x Five in an effort to aggregate and showcase all of my personal muses. I have so many. The name Blues x Five is actually the title of one of my all time favorite jazz records by the Miles Davis Quintet, Track 2 on Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet. I found it appropriate because I often have the blues by the time the evening comes around, however, the best way to cure the blues is with blues, you know? Sometimes all you need is a little jazz; and I've got a lot of that.

S: When and how were you first exposed to the genres and artists you spotlight?

BM: I was exposed to Soul, R&B and Hip-Hop at a very early age; 3 or 4, perhaps... My youngest brother, Jay, used to play it around the house all the time. I remember hearing Teena Marie, Maze feat. Frankie Beverly, Johnny Mathis, Roberta Flack, L.L., The Fat Boys etc. When I got older I used to
steal his records. I was exposed to Jazz & Funk a little later when I moved in with my grandparents. My Grandfather had a hell of a record collection, of which I proudly own today. He favored the Ohio Players, Glen Miller, Nat King Cole, Wes Montgomery, among others. And all the older folk around the neighborhood always had some jazz goin' no matter what time of the day it was. My interest in folk & blues came from when I moved to the south side of Richmond and started hanging out with all the hippies. Not only did they listen to the music, but they played it as well.

S: So, why do you do it? What is your reason behind creating the playlists and how long will you continue to provide them?

BM: Honestly, I created these playlists simply because I wanted to expose people to good music. I wanted to keep the musicians that inspire me relevant. Music is my life. Without it, I would have gone mad by now. The music you'll find on Blues x Five has inspired almost every aspect of my character. My speech, my "swag", the philosophies I subscribe to, all of that can be found in the music. I'll continue to provide these playlists for as long as my schedule permits. I don't plan on discontinuing this tradition anytime soon.

S: Good! Some lists are heavily blues and jazz influenced. Story behind that?

BM: Blues & Jazz are my favorite genres. My go to genres, so to speak. Nothing moves me more than than a saxophone solo, or a blue note, or a mean blues lick. I catch the spirit when I listen to musicians like Charles Mingus, Alice Coltrane, Buddy Guy, Lightnin' Hopkins... So jazz & blues make up the lot of my album collection.

S: Where do you draw inspiration from when compiling the playlists?

BM: Typically my playlists reflect a certain mood, a story. I may have just experienced a breakup or I may have a rainbow on my shoulder at the moment. So I'll make a playlist that I believe illustrates exactly how I'm feeling. Transitions are important to me too. I don't want the listener to be dancing one minute and running for the liquor cabinet the next.

S: Good point. You've collaborated with a few other bloggers/good music connoisseurs (A Strange Form of Life, Cork Grips, etc.). What is that process like?

BM: I started collaborating with others on playlists because I was curious what these people were listening to. I often find myself thinking: He strikes me as a Bob Dylan kind of guy. It'd be fun to mash-up with him on a playlist. The process involves me reaching out to the party of interest, asking them to email me 7-10 tracks they're really feeling at the moment. Then I match those to an even number of tracks. I base the tracks I include and the cover art designs in this collaborative playlist around their submissions. It's fun that way. It's worth noting that the collaboration with Cork Grips was an entirely new approach. He designed the cover art, and mixed everything down to one continuous track; something I may consider doing from time to time in the future.

Real Success: The Courage to Stretch

I'm glad to see you guys respond positively to the first post in our new series, Real Success. The principles and components necessary to be successful really intrigue me so I'm glad you guys are liking what I'm liking, lol.

Next I want to talk about Courage. Many people call it different things...balls, guts, nerve...but it all means the same thing, to be fearless. I can't remember where I found this piece on fear and love, but I read that all emotions and feelings sprout from either fear or love. It made so much sense. When you're worried, you're fearing a negative outcome. When you're angry, you're fearing that what has happen or what will happen will affect your life for the worst. When you're anxious, you fear missing out on something, or being too late.

It's the same with love. When you're happy, you're loving what's happening in your life at that moment. When you're nice to someone, it's because of the love (God) that is in your heart. When you're excited, you're anticipating that you will love what's coming into your life.

The key is to always operate out of love, and to push through the fear and stretch yourself. That's courage. How can we ever be successful if we are scared to stretch beyond what we've always been doing? The current CEO and of the NAACP, Benjamin Jealous, quoted his parents in a recent blog post. They told him as a child:

"We all get scared. The question, son, is how you respond. If you act in response to your fears, you are a coward. If you act in spite of your fears, you are courageous."

In every single book I've read about success, they all talk about doing things no matter how much fear you have. The desire for the reward of the accomplishment HAS to be greater than the amount of fear you have. Fear is paralyzing, when you're scared you don't act and therefore you can't be successful. I guess the big question is...why are you afraid???

So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

To be honest, fear is not all that bad. And I'm talking about the fear of doing something new, not the robbed at gun point fear. Ok so when you feel a little fear, that means you're stretching! If you feel 100% comfortable with what you're about to do, more than likely you won't feel satisfied with the result of your project because it didn't cause you to grow. It's like wasted energy (I'm speaking from experience).

I hope I'm making sense.

So now I would like to challenge you! Whatever your big plans are, how can you stretch them to the next level?? Why stop at owning a store when you can own a chain of stores across the country? Why stop at being a teacher when you can use technology to take your classroom around the world and back? Why stop at being a pro athlete when you can develop your own sports association that gives back to the community and allows kids to see the world!? Why not? What is there to be scared of?

Stretch you dreams people! And have the COURAGE to see your dreams through to the end. All billionaires and millionaires started somewhere, remember that the next time you get scared.

Let's Do Lunch: Easy Chicken Alfredo

So listen, once upon a time I was not gifted in the kitchen. Cutting up vegetables made me nervous and I was not even THINKING about cooking the basics like chicken and hamburgers...the suggestion would have been my laugh for the day. But those days are behind me and now if time permits, I can cook a mean pork chop or boneless chicken breast.

But for those who haven't taken the leap yet and are still addicted to going out to eat like I once was (not too long ago) I have a super easy alternative that will give you even more satisfaction than dining out. Chicken Alfredo with garlic bread anyone???

I have to give credit to my boyfriend, James of ClosetStudio.net, for this delicious find that we have eaten more times than I can remember. He's still not too gifted in the kitchen (you are getting better though!) so this was the perfect meal for him to make for us.

Stouffer's Easy Express Chicken Alfredo Skillet is the easiest meal you will ever make. Seriously. All you have to do is warm it up at medium temperature in a non-stick skillet. And not all frozen meals taste good, but this one is amazing! I always sprinkle a little parmesan cheese on top once it's done cooking.

While that's cooking, or when it's almost done, I warm up a piece of garlic bread. The fastest and smartest way to warm up garlic bread is to pop it in the toaster on a high setting. Comes out just the same.

If you want to get a little more fancy, or if you don't have any frozen garlic bread, you can make your own. Just butter 2 pieces of bread and lightly sprinkle garlic salt over it, then pop it in the oven until brown (I'm impatient so I always put the oven on broil).

Once everything is finished, just plate it up nicely and dig in! This meal is so easy I almost feel guilty when I say I "cooked" this. It's seriously just warming it up, but it looks and tastes good so I won't feel ashamed! And neither should you.

Did someone say "what about dessert?" I was thinking the exact same thing. Sticking to our easy peasy preparation method, I grabbed a small can of Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls with Cinnabun icing. Simply turn the oven to 400 degrees, grease a cookie sheet, space the cinnamon rolls 2 inches apart and bake for 8-10 minutes. When they're done, ice and devour!

Grinding. Symbol of Success?

We have all been pushed to tweet about the annoying people in our timeline who seem to equate success with the amount of time they spend in the studio, or how long they stay up doing things they could do during normal working hours. These are the Grinders.

Their efforts can not be ignored, and I applaud those who are working towards something. But, c'mon...not too much work can get done in the midst of you announcing it to the world. Because of the "Grinders" and the people who I see really getting work done and progressing towards their dreams, I wanted to do a series of posts about some key elements to success. These elements will be for us (yes that includes you) to discuss, debate and add to.

The books in the picture above are really my books from my book shelf, and my collection seems to keep growing. Most touch on a lot of the same topics, but it's nice to hear ideas in a different way and to be reminded of the things you've read before. So I will be referencing these books and hopefully we can come up with our own success cocktail. Ready?

So first I think we should start with what is success? Obviously this is a relative question and everyone will have a different answer, but I think we can start by crossing off what success is definitely not.

Success is not: Beating the next man.

I hear all the competitive people saying "whatttttttt?", but seriously hear me out. I've learned that we have to set personal goals and strive to reach them, not to one-up everyone else. When you one-up someone, your success is usually temporary because just as you're celebrating, someone is one-upping you. When you set a goal for something and you believe that it is your personal best, once you reach that goal, no matter what anyone else does, you will be pleased.

Now of course we get ideas and are influenced by others accomplishments, but when you set a goal you have to think about your motives. Do you want to reach this goal because this is something you truly desire in your heart? Or do you want this to show Joe Schmo that you're better than him?

Success is not: Microwavable

I think the downfall of our generation is that we want success as fast as we order food through the drive-thru or pop a bag of popcorn. What's amazing is that we have so many tools to help us get success quickly but just like microwaved pizza rolls, it's just not as good unless you cook them in the oven.

This is something that I JUST got my mind around. Like, last Sunday.

I was fully aware of the Seed, Time and Harvest process, and I knew that somethings took time to manifest but I just didn't know how to keep my cool in the mean time. Phillipians 4:6 NIV reads "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." "Now Jesus, (I would think to myself) How am I suppose to not be anxious?"

Well if you realize that you are not ready for what you're asking for, your perspective begins to shift. Then, if you realize that He is training you for what you asked for, your nerves can calm down a bit more. Now take it a step further and realize that He is smarter than you, and He knows the exact moment when you are ready to receive, suddenly you're as cool as a cucumber and you can't get rid of that little confident smirk that most successful people have.

Knowing that your success will come in due season allows you to enjoy the extra time it takes to cook your pizza rolls in the oven. And they will taste much much better. Get it?

Actually, success is the opposite of busyness. The more successful you are the more leisure time you should have. In Rich Dad Poor Dad's Cashflow Quadrant by Robert Kiyosaki he talks about 4 different quadrants that all people fall into financially.

E - Employee S - Self-Employed

B - Business Owner I - Investor

Before getting into the book I thought that I definitely was good by striving to be self-employed. Uhhh, no. Robert explains that a self-employed person can not enjoy a second of downtime without losing money. The money earned by a self-employed person, or an employee, depends directly on how much time is put in. Less time invested, less money. Or, the more time you put in, the more you show how unsuccessful you are with mastering money.

Still confused?

See, a business owner (the 3rd quadrant) can hire employees to run the business and he/she doesn't have to be there working to make money. And an investor (4th quadrant) doesn't even have to deal with the business at all, he/she simply invests money in exchange for more money down the line. Giving them all the free time in the world.

So what does this mean for the "Grinders"??? This means that they probably will never be as financially successful as they could be by working smarter, not harder.

What to Eat: Chili and Rice!

I think it's a general rule that when you can't have something, you end up wanting it even more! So here I am with food ideas galore after my week of fasting. I contemplated dropping the whole fashion thing to be a chef, but I was brought back to reality after praying (eating) and clearing my head. I won't be anyone's head chef in this lifetime, but you will get a good amount of food posts from me in the future. K?

So I was making big plans last week, wondering what would be the lucky meal that I would devour once I made it through the week. Not wanting to run to the nearest restaurant, I called up Grannie to see if she could make me a pot of chili...better yet, "Can you teach me how to make it....please???". She agreed, and I was so excited! (Ironically my first meal was a chicken quesadilla and chips and salsa but we'll talk about that in another post)

Grannie told me to pick up:

1 small bell pepper

1 onion

1 chili seasoning packet

1 ground beef (can substitute for turkey)

2 cans of chili beans

1 can of tomatos

1 can of tomato paste

Once I got to her house on Saturday it was time to get down to business. I felt like I really had to show Grannie that I knew a thing or two about cooking because she is a professional and I knew she'd run me over if I showed signs of weakness. So I was cutting up the bell pepper and browning the meat while she brought us to tears by cutting up the onion.

When the meat started cooking in a cast iron skillet, we added the veggies and chili seasoning packet (I could've finished right here because it smelled so good). In a separate pot she cooked the chili beans and canned tomatos, adding seasonings that I'm sure you would know to add only after cooking for years.. Garlic powder, sugar, chili powder, seasoning salt, and more sugar.

Once the meat was totally brown we added it (along with the veggies it cooked with) to the pot of beans and tomatos. It was a little more soupy then I would like it so she told me to let it cook down and to add a little more tomato paste while stirring it every so often. She never let me stir it though, of course.

Once I got my chili home it was really time to make the magic happen! She made chili with rice before so I made a pot of white rice and a pan of Jiffy cornbread to go with my chili.

I like to go all out -_-

Cornbread is so much better than crackers. With my rice topped with a hefty amount of chili, cheese and a side of cornbread, I felt this was definitely the way to end a week of no eating. Praise Jesus! lol.

Too Much Of A Good Thing?

In the first quarter of 2011 (January-March), I downloaded over 10 new albums/mixtapes. My ears have been taken on musical trip after musical trip. There are even zip files and playlists on my computer that have not yet made it to my iPod. It's all been very lovely, but frankly, I'm starting to get a little confused. My attention span for a new album/mixtape? A week at best. After that, some new, amazing, very hyped project is being released and me and my ears move on to the next.

So, is too much of a good thing a bad thing?

Quite possibly. Friends, we are in the midst of a New Music Overload. Daily, this new artist's and that established artist's music is flooding our news feeds, time lines and inboxes begging to be downloaded and imported into our lives. Remember waiting for artists to release those highly anticipated albums every few months or so? Those days are long gone! On any day of the week, ask a friend, check any blog, and have several downloadable options at your fingertips. Because none of us wants to be out of the loop we procure every bit of it. In the event that Kendrick Lamar or King come up in conversation we want to confidently contribute our two cents to the discussion. But with so much music in our possession and passing through our ears, how do we grow fond of and fall in love with an artist if we're constantly being tempted by a newer, younger, faster, edgier one?

It would seem that the laws of supply and demand are in overdrive. To stay current, an artist has to release music constantly. Producing an album once a year is fine, as long as a mixtape is circulated between those yearly dates to tide us over. If not, one could become what all artists fear most... irrelevant. I don't know about you all, but as a consumer, I'm a little tapped out and starting to become... indifferent. Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.

So how do we (consumers) decipher between having everything and having what we really want? Between too much and enough? Suggestion time: pick a favorite genre and explore it. It's okay if you don't know about every new release. Find a style of music that makes you feel awesome and stick with that for a while. “Doing music” is cool now and the viral marketing boom has made it increasingly easy to spread said music, so the releases will definitely keep coming. Don't overload your ears trying to keep up with it all! Artists: good luck? Because just when you think you've captured your audience's attention, some new kid on the block with ProTools and a new condenser mic from Guitar Center is email blasting out his latest mixtape. So, instead of trying to conquer all, play to your strengths and conquer a core group. They'll love you forever. (I think.)

Comfy Flats for Spring

*Peeks around*...is it ok to pull my feet out of thick white tube socks? Will the snow give us a break so we can finally get excited about Spring? God, I hope so. I'll know for sure if it's ok to go sockless when I'm around my grandma and she doesn't fuss me out and throw a pair of socks at me. Until then we can browse this seasons latests shoe styles and prepare our shopping list for all the new things to add to our wardrobe this season. Brand New Flava in Ya Ear!

EVERYTHING IN YOUR IPOD SUCKS! Just kidding. But I do have your attention now. And I do have two new artists that you should be importing into your iTunes Library today. I'm going to be brief this week as it's my 25th birthday eve and I'm ready to party. I'm well aware that I can be a bit long winded at times, so consider this a gift from me to you.

KING

First up is the female trio, KING. There names: Paris and Amber (twins) and Anita. Their sound: heavenly. They hail from Minneapolis and Los Angeles respectively. Before KING came to be, they each spent years unknowingly preparing for their chance encounter. Read that story here. How they met is indeed a captivating story, but not as engrossing as the sound they've created and began to share with the world.

Unlike preceding “girl groups” this trio is completely self contained; responsible for their songwriting and production. KING's ethereal melodies on “Hey” and “Supernatural” wrap around your ears like warm honey would a boiling hot spoon. Yes, it's like that. Their collective tone is comparable to what angels are probably going to sound like at the gates of Heaven. Still not convinced? They have impressive cosigns: Estelle, Erykah Badu, ?uestlove and Lalah Hathaway have all bestowed the ladies with stamps of approval. One thing I love doing is scouring the internet for new music. Recently I found out about world-renowned drummer, Jamire Williams and his band's free EP Memo To All. It's Jazz, Hip-Hop and a little Funk all pulped together. There's plenty of instrumental improvisation to garner the respect of jazz heads and a good amount of thick drum pockets, both live and programmed to make the hip-hop lover's head nod. A few scattered vocals appear throughout to round out the unencumbered vibe of the entire effort. My favorite track is the EP's last, “For You (For Who?)”. Download this if you're looking for a break from the same 10 songs your local urban radio station plays all day. It's a definite palate cleanser!
